Diljit Dosanjh's Sardaar Ji 3 Sparks Row Over Pakistani Actress, Gains Political Support (Social Media)
Entertainment News: Punjabi singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh’s upcoming film Sardaar Ji 3 has become the center of this major controversy in India. The uproar began after the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) penned a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding severe action against Dosanjh for featuring Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in the film. Their demands went as far as revoking his Indian citizenship, calling it a matter of national concern.
According to FWICE, casting a Pakistani actor, especially amid heightened Indo-Pak tensions, was “irresponsible.” However, Sardaar Ji 3 had already wrapped up shooting well before the tragic Pahalgam terror attack, which occurred just days before the controversy surfaced.
While the film is yet to see a theatrical release in India, Sardaar Ji 3 has opened to packed cinemas in Pakistan, where it was released internationally on June 27. A video shared by Pakistani cinema chain Cinegold Plex showing full-house screenings quickly went viral. Dosanjh also reposted clips from Universal Cinema, highlighting the enthusiastic response from fans across the border.
In a surprising turn, BJP national spokesperson R.P. Singh extended his full support to Dosanjh. Calling him a “national asset” and a global ambassador of Indian culture, Singh criticized FWICE’s demand as “irrational and inconsistent.”
He emphasized that the film was completed before the recent tragic events and questioned the selective outrage“When India played a cricket match against Pakistan around the same time, there was no uproar. Indian news channels routinely invite Pakistani guests for debates. Should those anchors also give up their citizenship now?” he asked.
Hobby Dhaliwal, convenor of BJP’s cultural cell in Chandigarh, echoed similar sentiments in a press conference. He complimented Dosanjh as a cultural icon, saying,“He’s more than an artist,he’s the pride of Punjab and India. Targeting him with baseless allegations during tense times is not only unjustified but shameful.”
The controversy has crossed party lines. Leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly, Pratap Singh Bajwa from Congress, described FWICE’s demand as “unreasonable.”“Diljit has made us proud on global platforms like Coachella and Met Gala. Such representation should be celebrated, not condemned.”
AAP MP Dr. Vikramjit Singh Sahney also labeled the backlash as “irrational.”“The film’s production predates the unfortunate Pahalgam incident. Timing should not be confused with intent,” he added.
Akal Takht’s Message that nature knows no borders. In a subtle yet spiritual message, Acting Jathedar of Akal Takht, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargar, lent support to Dosanjh by invoking Gurbani. Without naming any country, he pointed out how,“The sky remains undivided, the wind flows freely, and birds fly without restriction. Nature itself doesn’t believe in borders.”
Many from the Indian film fraternity have stood up for Diljit:
Veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar, in a TV appearance, reasoned that the film’s production occurred long before any attack. “How could he have predicted such a thing?” he questioned, calling for empathy from the government and the censor board.
Director Imtiaz Ali, currently working with Dosanjh, said:
“He is a son of the soil… always seen with the Indian flag at music events. Also, casting decisions aren’t solely made by actors.”
Actress Rakhi Sawant showed her support through Instagram posts, sharing a clip of Diljit and Hania Aamir.
“Congratulations, on your Bollywood debut my sweetheart Hania,” she wrote. “She’s my favorite! Everyone should watch Sardaar Ji 3. ”
The uproar surrounding Sardaar Ji 3 has sparked a debate about nationalism, cross-border artistic collaboration, and the role of censorship. Diljit Dosanjh’s case is more than a film controversy,as political leaders, spiritual heads, and Bollywood icons weigh in, it’s a test of how India balances art, identity, and diplomacy.
